Our Approach

Reflective Learning helps to identify areas of Maths that learners have yet to master. Once these gaps have been identified, we go back to the grade-level in which the break took place and we build up a learner’s understanding in a logical manner up to the level at which they should be at.

Maths requires students to link more advanced concepts they are learning to foundational concepts they have already understood. But if these foundational concepts are shaky, they can start to fall further and further behind until they no longer believe they can “do” the work. These gaps (the difference between what learners are supposed to know in their grade and what they really know) are called backlogs. Significant backlogs is the reason why the majority of learners struggle with Maths.

Backlogs develop due to a lack of quality learning experiences (opportunity to learn), not to be confused with an intellectual deficit (inability to learn). Missed opportunities can happen for many reasons: if a student is absent from school, unhappy or distracted, or experiencing changes in teachers, classes or schools – so in other words, it can happen in any school. However, just because an opportunity to learn was missed, it does not mean that it cannot be caught up!

We have seen that “doing another example” is not an effective substitute for building deep understanding in Maths concepts. Instead of endless practice examples, our diagnostics allow us to go back to problem areas from earlier years of schooling to build the core conceptual understanding that is needed before practice examples should be used.

Without understanding the root cause of a learning gaps, it is difficult to remedy. Diagnostic assessment is designed to measure a learner’s understanding of critical concepts and cognitive skills. It is focused on improving an individual’s learning into the future, not merely reporting level of achievement. It should always provide personal feedback – the more focused the feedback, the more valuable the assessment.

We take pride in building our approach upon the latest pedagogical research from around the world, even going down to how best to teach a specific concept. We also believe in contributing toward academic realm by publishing papers on our learning and results.

Reflective Learning focuses on the underlying concepts that are the foundational blocks of every curriculum. This means that it can be used with curriculum including CAPS, Cambridge and IEB. Our benchmarking standards are carefully aligned with international research.

Learners can access Reflective Learning from any smart device or computer. We recommend using Google Chrome for best experience. The teacher dashboard should be used from a laptop or PC.

We have carefully designed our content to be incredibly data-light! And because we know not everyone has constant connectivity, learners are only required to connect after each assessment to upload their result and gather their next set of catch-up work.

Teachers are far too busy to deal with more admin! We provide end-to-end service including:
Demo and trial logins to understand our process
Account set up
Ongoing technical support
Feedback session to explore results

The Practicalities

Reflective Learning focuses on the underlying concepts that are the foundational blocks of every curriculum. Our benchmarking standards are carefully aligned with international research.

Learners can access Reflective Learning from any smart device or computer.

We have carefully designed our content to be incredibly data-light! And because we know not everyone has constant connectivity, learners are only required to connect after each assessment to upload their result and gather their next set of catch-up work.

It is important to help learners understand their results so that they take responsibility for their learning. Encourage them work through their catch-up course on any smart device at their own pace. Parents can monitor learners to see their progress or in case they get stuck understanding something along the way. If you need extra support, we have great partners who provide online and in-person help.

Packages

We believe that learners should have the opportunity to know where they stand with their education. Every learner can take a Maths diagnostic across each of the seven Maths learning journeys to understand whether they have any significant gaps – for free. For detailed results and to start the catch-up process, a monthly or annual subscription can be bought.

We currently have three diagnostics available for Mathematics:
Junior Primary - suitable for Grades 3 and 4 (24 concepts measured)
Senior Primary - suitable for Grades 5 to 7 (51 concepts)
High School - suitable for Grades 8 to 11 (81 concepts)

Definitely! Use our Free Starter package to assess each learner and receive high-level results. You can either pick specific learners for the catch-up or purchase licences for the whole grade at a bulk discount.

Yes! Accurate measurement of progress is important to ensure that your investment is impactful. By using the assessments as a baseline and summative measure, you can see incremental progress of individual and cohorts.
